News From the Field
Navajyoti Center, in the Kathmandu suburb of Baluwatar, is the first day school for developmentally disabled children in Nepal, a welcome setting in a country where ignorance about the causes of mental disabilities and a lack of treatment options can make life very difficult.
At Navajyoti (“new sacred flame”), an AHF partner for eight years, 70 children learn life skills in a warm and caring environment. The wonderful teachers utilize dance, yoga, speech therapy, arts, crafts, sports, and games in their lessons. For those who are able, the center also teaches basic literacy and math, and even some vocational skills like candle and paper making, and bicycle repair.
In the past few years, Navajyoti has also produced three Special Olympians – including Naresh and Ajit, above – and have won five medals. They are a talented and happy group!
AHF takes care of thousands of people in the Himalayas who have no one else to care for them. Navajyoti Center is just one of the many ways AHF helps bring hope and dignity to the lives of Nepalis, Sherpas, and Tibetans.
