Micro Dairy in Norzinling, Tibetan Settlement, Dhorpatan, Nepal

A small program (and a $70 cow) has made a huge change in the lives of Tibetan refugees in Norzinling camp in remote Nepal.

Norzinling camp in Dhorpatan is an isolated Tibetan settlement about five days walk from the nearest town of Pokhara. Dhorpatan was one of the bases of the Maoist rebels—its remote location and forest hills provided a safe haven but the rebels drove away the local tourists and the only source of income for the Tibetans who share the land.

In 2005, AHF started the Tibetan Enterprise Fund to encourage new local business development. AHF helped purchase a cow for each of the 34 families to start a micro dairy—a partnership with a 15% local contribution. From one cow, today many of the families have three (a cow and two calves) and soon triple the milk production.

The camp officer tells us “Mrs. Khyigha at present has one cow and two calves, and she is running a Tibetan Paying Guest House therefore cow milk are used for that and now a days she is getting more guest as compare to others.” Like Khyigha there are many other success stories—Mrs. Nyima Lhamo has two cows and today sells milk to the locals at her small tea shop.

For refugees, especially women like Nyima and Khyigha, a $70 cow provides income, employment, a future and also the pride and dignity of standing up on their own feet.
