The best games ever (no, not the Olympics)
In the remote village of Bampti, nestled in the Ramechhap mountains, the kids of the Sherpa School prove they are champions both on and off the soccer field.
Ang Lama, the director of the Sherpa School, reports that they have almost 230 children in school this year, with classes from nursery to grade five. For years they have been trying to get government approval to extend to class eight, but since there is no real government in Nepal, things are progressing rather slowly. However a bit of bureaucratic red tape is not going to get in the way of these kids learning, and having a bit of fun.
This year, the Sherpa School proudly came in third in an interschool soccer competition and the school’s basketball competition was won by the fierce “green team”. All the kids had a great time at the school picnic and the annual sports day was proclaimed ‘the best games ever’ by the schools chairman, Ang Tsering.
The school has also started the construction of a much needed dormitory and new dining hall for those students living in villages that are too far away for a daily commute – particularly in the rainy season when the paths and ridges skirting steep slopes become slippery and treacherous. And we can’t have any broken legs if the Sherpa School is going to win next year’s soccer competition!
The American Himalayan Foundation helps the Sherpa School with teachers’ salaries and lunch for a bunch of kids, and covers the costs for kids to attend the local government school beyond class five.
