Upper Mustang, Nepal, for generations known as the Kingdom of Lo, is a happy accident of history.  Culturally, geographically, and historically Tibetan, but within the borders of Nepal,  it has become a time capsule of Tibetan heritage and a place where the rich tradition of Tibetan Buddhism is carried on to this day - sheltered from the occupation of Tibet.

A place to stay, play, and learn

Most of the 6,000 people of Upper Mustang are traders in the winter and subsistence farmers the rest of the year.  For many years, parents faced the difficult choice of taking along babies and young children with them into the fields or leaving them at home unattended.  Neither option was safe; one year four children from one village drowned in small streams.
